Living in a townhouse, condo, or apartment often means dealing with a more compact kitchen– something our team runs into all the time during the design process! While small kitchens might seem limiting at first, with thoughtful planning, we’ve seen firsthand how efficient spaces like these can maximize on functionality and convenience. In fact, some of our clients end up loving that everything from appliances to cookware is within reach in a small space.
When approached with the job of redesigning a compact kitchen, we keep the following tips in mind:
Good Planning is Essential
Good planning is the backbone of any small kitchen design. We start our design process by assessing the needs and habits of our clients. What do they use most frequently? What and how often do they cook? What can be stored away? We plan the layout of the space around these answers, making sure to utilize vertical space effectively with high cabinets, and considering pull-out shelves or drawers to make access easier.
Stay Compact
Every inch of space counts in a small kitchen. This means you need to stay compact during the design process– especially when it comes to appliances. We often recommend downsizing to smaller, more efficient appliances that can fit seamlessly into the kitchen’s layout. For instance, a slim dishwasher or a compact refrigerator can save significant space without sacrificing on functionality.
Thoughtful Storage
Storage is always a challenge in small kitchens, but with thoughtful planning, finding creative solutions is possible. We often recommend choosing cabinetry that reaches to the ceiling, providing extra storage space for items you don’t use frequently. We also often incorporate features like glass-front cabinets to give the illusion of more space, or corner cabinets with pull-out shelves that make use of every nook and cranny.
